The Pretenders
2000 Miles

“2000 Miles Is very far” lead singer of The Pretenders, Chrissie Hynde, details. Although a rather erroneous Christmas song, there is still something festive about this emotional love song. On face value, it sounds like a story of two long-distanced lovers, but in reality it is believed to be about The Pretenders original guitar player, James Honeyman-Scott, who died the year before. “Sometimes in my dreams/You appear” she sings with a certain pain behind each word. There’s a beautiful folk-feel about the backing track, featuring a very simple repeated guitar piece and a metronome style backing beat. One thing this song lacks is length, being a little on the short side. But the pain and emotion portrayed through the lyrics and Chrissie’s vocals makes up for this ‘shortfall’. Pure emotion.
