6th Of December-Mika; Vive Le Vent!

Mika
Vive La Vent

Christmas of course is not a purely English speaking celebration. Worldwide, millions of people are enjoying the holiday season, singing songs in their own mother tongue. So in case you were concerned that this list was only going to contain English Christmas songs, you’d be wrong. Please welcome to the stage, Mika!

That’s right; the UK singer behind the likes of Popular Song and Grace Kelly released a version of a French song called Vive La Vent in 2011. It actually features on an album called Noel! Noel!Noel! This EP also contains tracks from Rufus Wainwright, Iggy Pop, Imelda May, and rather strangely Carli Bruni (who is married to ex-president du France; Nicolas Sarkozy).

Literally translated, Vive La Vent means “Long Live The Wind”, or at least the winds of winter. Set to the tune of Jingle Bells, this is a traditional French Carol which Bi-lingual Mika has added his own charm to. Although you may not be able to understand what Mika’s singing about, it’s obvious to see that he loves doing so. There is a certain bounce and enthusiasm, borderline cockiness, in his vocals that is truly joyous. An enchanting backing track accompanies him, along with an equally excited choir who “La La La” their way through the scales. The brief drum/percussion-solo is interesting, neigh odd, but just adds to the uniqueness of this track. It may not be on your usual Xmas party-playlist (Unless you’re French of course) but why not? Joyeux Noel to you all!

Vive Le Vent/Vive Le Vent/Vive Le Vent D’Hiver!”
