14th Of December-Eartha Kitt, Santa Baby

Eartha Kitt
Santa Baby

Most people actively seek to be on Santa’s nice list. Others aim for his naughty list. While Eartha Kitt aimed for the nice list by being a little naughty in the brilliant Santa Baby. Recorded back in 1953, this track takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the Santa’s Christmas list, and what Eartha wishes for isn’t half bad!

“Santa Honey, I want a Yacht and that’s really not a lot…” she purrs over a seductive and decadent backing track; A ring (And not on the phone), a cheque and so much more. She even goes as far as to choose a colour for her soon-to-be “Outa Space convertible” (Light Blue in case you’re reading Santa…). Strings dance up and the down the scales as she requests ever more, including some “Decorations bought at Tiffany’s”. You can tell Eartha loved recording this track as she extends her S’s in a sensual and seductive manner. It’s the sort of song that performed with a lot of winks and cheeky nods.

It has been covered by almost too many artists, ranging from Madonna and Kylie Minogue, to The PussyCat Dolls, Macy Gray and Taylor Swift. Oh, and of course the wonderful Miss Piggy in It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie. But Eartha is the original, and perhaps the best? She’s a good girl with a naughty hint of spice.

“Come and trim my Christmas Tree…”
