The Waitresses
Christmas Wrapping
It’s around now in the festive calendar that the presents are
brought, and the wrapping starts to commence. And if you need a perfect Christmas
wrapping song, then look no further than exactly that; Christmas Wrapping by the post-punk 80s band The Waitresses.
The plinky-plonk of piano keys and sleigh bells are superbly
interrupted by the smashing of drums and heavy guitar strings; this is no usual
Christmas song. There is a definite air of punk here, with its repeated riffs
and the spoken-song/rap (Wrap) by lead singer Patty Donahue giving this track a
different edge. It’s therefore fresh and funky, fizzing away with festive
vibes.
Lyrically charming, the song is told through the perspective
of a busy woman who is determined to avoid Christmas. “I just need to catch my breath/Christmas by myself this year”. Flashbacks
throughout the year occur, including spring, Summer (“Sun burn in the 3rd degree”) and Halloween, all the
while trying to find time to see a guy. A series of mishaps keep the two apart
until Christmas eve, when the shared lack of cranberries lead them to bump
together in a shop queue. It’s like One
Day with a happier outcome! And it goes to show, try all you might, theres
no escaping the Christmas season!
